Elliott Richard Haut, MD, PhD, FACS is Vice Chair of Quality, Safety, & Service in the Department of Surgery at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. He also has a faculty appointment in the Department of Health Policy & Management at The Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health. He is certified in both General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care by the American Board of Surgery. Dr. Haut’s clinical practice at The Johns Hopkins Hospital covers all aspects of trauma and acute care surgery, as well as surgical critical care. He was a previous Trauma Medical Director at Johns Hopkins Bayview Hospital (level II trauma center).

Dr. Haut has been continuously funded via extramural support for over a decade via grants and contracts from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) and the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI). He has been a co-investigator on numerous projects funded by the NIH/NHLBI, AHRQ, PCORI, the Department of Defense (DOD), and the Henry M. Jackson Foundation. Dr. Haut completed his PhD in the Graduate Training Program in Clinical Investigation at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health where he completed a wide variety of coursework including epidemiology, biostatistics, comparative effectiveness research and clinical research design. He has authored more than 300 peer-reviewed articles, as well as dozens of invited editorials, books and chapters. He is active in the peer-review publishing process with roles as Editor in Chief of Trauma Surgery & Acute Care Open (TSACO), membership on other editorial boards and has ad-hoc peer-reviewed for over 40 journals.

Dr. Haut has played numerous leadership roles in trauma surgery. He is past-President of the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma (EAST) and chaired the EAST Guidelines Committee. He is past-Chair of Maryland TraumaNet. He was lead author of a paper commissioned by the National Academies of Medicine titled “Military Trauma Care’s Learning Health System: The Importance of Data Driven Decision Making” which was used to support the report titled “A National Trauma Care System: Integrating Military and Civilian Trauma Systems to Achieve Zero Preventable Deaths After Injury.” Dr. Haut was a member of the National Quality Forum (NQF) Trauma Outcomes Committee. Dr. Haut is on the Board of Directors of the newly reorganized Coalition for National Trauma Research (CNTR). In 2021, Dr. Haut was appointed by Governor Lawrence J Hogan, Jr to the Maryland Statewide Emergency Medical Services Advisory Council (SEMSAC).
