Publishing in The BMJ may be a pinnacle professional achievement but how does research really shift the dial on patient outcomes? We bring together experts from research funding organisations, policymakers, people with lived experience, research leaders and editors to discuss the big questions that cut across the medical research community.

This year we are focussing on two areas:

1. How data flows from patients and citizens to research and back to deliver benefits
2. How we formulate the building blocks of research – the research questions –  in the most equitable and comprehensive way

Funders will be interested in hearing from: 

• Cathie Sudlow presenting findings from her newly published report into the use of data across the UK health and research systems
• Stéphane Maikovsky on how LifeARc is Funding for impact; to bridge the translation gap for diseases that don’t get the attention they need

Policymakers will be interested in hearing from:

Researchers will be interested in: 

• Axel Kaehne from Edge Hill,  Justine Karpusheff from The Health Foundation and representatives from NICE discuss how to create trust and transparency in using AI for evidence synthesis
• Helen Macdonald, The BMJ Research Integrity Editor chairing a panel discussion between research leaders from funders and universities looking at the best way of tackling our research integrity issues well before publication
• THIS Labs and The Health Foundation panellists discussing using collaborative online approaches to generate solutions with impact
• Abimbola Ayorinde from Warwick Medical School presenting how they have co-created knowledge partnerships with racially minoritised and marginalised communities and groups
• Lucy Chappell outlining how she works with politicians and civil servants to bring about change to deliver impactful research for patients
• BMJs Known Unknowns recording a live podcast looking at what questions we need research to be answering, and what needs to happen to get the solutions into practice
